Sport Climber, Trad Climber, Photographer

I have pretty much been climbing since I got out of the womb. As a kid I was obsessed with climbing anything I could get my hands on; trees, poles, boulders and the side of our brick/stone house, but as the years went on “climbing” started to look alot different. In highschool I found out about these heavenly places called Climbing Gyms... I was HOOKED. From that point on, I spent pretty much every waking (and sleeping) moment consumed by progressing as a climber. Climbing really helped foster my love for the outdoors, which led to me getting a job with the US Forest Service as a Cadastral Surveyor.

What was your first experience climbing?

As a kid I would climb every boulder or tree I could get my hands on, but my first real experience rock climbing outdoors was as a teenager bouldering with my brother in Oklahoma. This experience really opened my eyes to the total radness that is rock climbing.

What is your favorite type of climbing?

I really love sport and trad! It honestly depends on the area!

Any style of climbing that you particularly dislike?

Not a huge fan of speed climbing.. No offense..

Where are your favorite areas to climb?

Ten Sleep, WY Frenchman Coulee, WA City of Rocks, ID Hueco Tanks, TX

Tell us about your all-time favorite climb.

This is a tough question! I have so many favorites for so many different reasons. I guess I would say my favorite climb was the first time I led trad. It was during sunrise at Rumbling Bald in North Carolina on some super chill two pitch 5.7 hand crack. I had honestly been a little worried about placing my own gear, but when I got on the wall I felt this insane sense of peace come over me. I cruised up the wall with some bomber cam placements and when I got to the top I was rewarded with an amazing view and some nice warm sun. Pretty great feeling.

Why do you climb?

I simply climb to feel free. The higher I get off the ground the more freedom I feel. Climbing has always been an amazing escape for me. No matter what is going on in life, I can just get on the wall and it seems like all of the stress of life just fades away.

What other hobbies/interests do you have?

I'm honestly into anything that gets me in the outdoors: Skiing/snowboarding, backpacking, fly fishing, mountain biking, photography, kayaking and surfing.

What 3 emojis describe you best?

Mountain, pine tree and rock...

What or who inspires you?

Just being out in nature inspires me more than anything. Some people that inspire me to explore are Edward Abbey, John Muir and JImmy Chin.

Tell us about your dream vacation.

My dream vacation is backpacking and trad climbing in Norway.

Favorite post-send meal.

A big delicious Pizza, with pretty much any topping I can get my hands on.

What are your long-term climbing goals?

I really want to continue progressing as a trad and ice climber.

Anything else we should know?

I grow a pretty mean beard..

On Episode 203 of the Enormocast, I meet up with Mary Eden, AKA Tradprincess on a porch in Moab, UT. It was a pleasant morning prelude to scorcher of a day and Mary and I got a solid hour in just before she bailed to Flagstaff. Mary came from Appalachia and ended up in Moab with enough gumption to try climbing. After a few years as a hobbyist, Mary got down to business in 2015. She had a series of old school mentors that instilled the hard ethics of climb, don’t talk. But nevertheless, after a bet, Mary got an Instagram account and Tradprincess was born. Starting off as a hard core traddie, Mary now tries to embrace all forms of rock climbing in her relentless pursuit of fun and freedom on the rocks.
